The psychotherapy science study programme at Sigmund Freud Private University (SFU) is the first university-based, theoretical-scientific and practice-oriented preparation for the psychotherapist profession in Europe. Our study programme was the first to place psychotherapy as a science at the centre of an academic education.
Since the winter semester 2015/16, the Bachelor’s degree in psychotherapy science has been offered in Linz, analogous to the study programme in Vienna. It is possible to enter the degree programme at any time, i.e. also in the summer semester. Students at SFU Linz may also study at another SFU location such as Vienna, Berlin or Ljubljana.

Linking teaching, practice and research
Teaching at SFU is practice-oriented and includes theory, personal self-awareness and acquiring psychotherapeutic competence. Personal development of the students and internships accompany the programme from the very beginning: from the 1st semester onwards, in-house practice at our University Outpatient Clinic for Psychotherapy in Linz is possible.
From the third year of the Bachelor’s degree programme, one of the various psychotherapeutic schools must be chosen as a focus. Within the framework of this specialisation, all teaching contents are taught as provided for by the Austrian Psychotherapy Act.
The Master’s degree programme is completed at SFU Vienna and introduces the research methods of psychotherapy science. Students are involved in research projects at the university as early as possible. With the Master’s degree, the final certificate of the training association is also acquired and thus the possibility to be registered in the list of psychotherapists for the independent practice of psychotherapy (upon reaching the age of 28).
